Understanding Canada Student Direct Stream (SDS) Visa Requirements

Canada remains one of the most sought-after destinations for international students. To streamline the visa application process, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced the Student Direct Stream (SDS). This fast-track visa processing pathway boasts faster processing times and higher approval rates for students from qualifying countries, including India.

Key Prerequisites for SDS Stream

To apply under the SDS stream, you must satisfy specific, non-negotiable requirements:

  • Letter of Acceptance: You must have an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.
  • Language Proficiency: You must prove your language skills with an eligible test, such as IELTS Academic (minimum overall and band score of 6.0) or PTE Academic (minimum overall score of 60).
  • Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC): You must purchase a GIC of the required threshold (currently CAD $20,635) from a participating bank to cover first-year living expenses.
  • Tuition Payment: Proof that you have paid the tuition fees for your first year of study.
  • Upfront Medical Exam: A medical exam certificate from an IRCC-approved panel physician.

Why Documentation Matters

Even though the SDS process is fast, incomplete documentation is a leading cause of visa delays or refusals. Ensure that your Statement of Purpose (SOP) clearly outlines your academic pathway and how your chosen program aligns with your previous studies and future career goals.
