IELTS vs. PTE Academic: Which Language Test is Right for You?

When preparing to study or immigrate abroad, proving your English language proficiency is a mandatory first step. Two of the most widely accepted tests are the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE). While both evaluate reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, their formats and scoring systems differ significantly.

Overview of the Formats

Here is how the two tests compare in delivery and assessment:

  • IELTS: Available in both paper-based and computer-delivered formats. The speaking section is conducted face-to-face with a human examiner, which some students prefer for natural interaction.
  • PTE Academic: Completely computer-based. All sections, including speaking, are completed on a computer, and the test is scored using automated AI algorithms.

Scoring and Acceptance

IELTS uses a band score system ranging from 1.0 to 9.0. Most universities target a minimum of 6.0 to 6.5. PTE scoring is based on a scale from 10 to 90, with score ranges like 58 equivalent to IELTS 6.5. Both are universally accepted in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. For Canada, both tests are recognized under the SDS stream, making both viable options for Indian applicants.
